Computer Networking

The Design Problem/ Design BriefProblem: Our group was to find tools to discover a computer network configuration with many systems. We have to gather information including connection, host name, layer 2 MAC address and layer 3 TCP/IP. Finally, we are to network information to other PCs on the network.

Brief: We are going to make two computers on the same network give each other information. We intend to solve this problem by plugging both of the computers in, turning them on and finding a connection to the internet to ensure that they each have an IP address. Once that is finished we are going to open the ‘command prompt’ from the start menu. We will then enter the information given in the informational document given by Mr. Martin.

Analysis

1. Will the computers be able to work independently once they are unplugged from each other?
2. What does this experiment accomplish?
3. Is this experiment safe to try?
4. Is this an expensive experiment to conduct?
5. What will this experiment accomplish?
6. How do we know what kind of PC’s to use for this experiment?
7. What will this experiment accomplish?
8. How many people will it take to complete this experiment?
9. How long will this experiment take to complete?
10. Who would this information be useful too?

Synthesis:
1. Yes once the computers are no longer connected to the network they will be able to work independently.
2. This experiment will accomplish connecting two PC’s on the same network and gathering information from each.
3. Yes as long as your hands are dry and the computers are on a clean, dry surface.
4. No this is not an expensive experiment to complete because the teacher had all of the materials.
5. This experiment accomplishes making two computers work as one and share information through a network.
6. Mr. Martin supplied us with the PC’s.
7. This experiment will accomplish connecting two PC’s on the same network and gathering information from each.
8. It took about 5 people to complete this experiment.
9. This experiment took about 70 minutes to complete.
10. This information will be useful to the computer operator

Evaluation:
When we conducted this experiment we had not much difficulty plugging in the cords, but we stayed on track when following the instructions of how to use command prompt. We plugged seven cords into the two computers and the network box. When we had to take the time to plug each cord in one at a time it took up a bit of time but the experiment worked out well.
